C&C Community Dialogue About Racism and Inequities

Dear City and Country Community,
We are at an inflection point in our nation’s history and in the independent school community. Students and alumni across the country have bravely broken their silence about the harm enacted in their communities by schools and institutions they have attended. At C&C, we know we are not exempt from having enacted that same brand of harm—racism and anti-Blackness in particular. The stories that have come to us from students across our communities are a gift to us all and a call to action to effect change for them and for our current and future students.
We acknowledge the enduring racism and anti-Blackness that exists across our country, our institutions, and our community. Our school’s long history includes reinforcing systems of privilege and racism against Black people and all People of Color, and we are committed to examining C&C’s structures, policies, programs, and practices and to taking action to change them.
We know that members of our own community have experienced pain, and we hope you will share your stories with us as we take the next steps to confront and combat bias and inequity at our school. C&C will be hosting facilitated forums in July and inviting our alumni, alumni parents, former faculty and staff, and current community members to participate and share reflections from their time at school. We have set up a link for you to share your personal experiences, if you so choose. You can also use this form to update your contact information. We hope you will partner with us as we engage in deep reflection and move forward with meaningful individual and institutional change; we know that these processes must occur simultaneously. We recognize that revisiting these experiences is traumatic and do not request that you put our need to resolve these challenges ahead of your own self-care.
