Archives

The City and Country School Archives contain an extensive collection of documents, photographs, and student work related to the School’s pedagogy and history, as well as the evolution of education in America. Many of these original writings and artifacts are irreplaceable and invaluable to the study of progressive education.

Collection

Stretching over 100 cubic feet and organized into 15 distinct collections, the C&C Archives include documents and artifacts related to: Caroline Pratt’s life and work prior to the founding of the School; the program and philosophy of C&C; administrative records and publications; and a wide array of photographs, videos, and original student work. Additionally, City and Country is home to many of the early Bureau of Educational Experiments records, dating from 1916.

The Archives Exhibit Online

In May 2014, City and Country mounted an exhibit of the School’s Archives in celebration of its 100th year. Drawing on C&C’s rich archival collection, the exhibit told the story of Caroline Pratt and the School’s origins; its role in the development of progressive education and the community of Greenwich Village; and the continuity of its unique program. View the exhibit online, as well as video interviews with the show’s planning committee, here.
