COMMUNITY ART SHOWS: Alum and Teacher Work Featured

It shouldn't be surprising to learn that two members of our community will be featured in art shows later this month.

C&C Alum, John Crawford '67, will be featured at a gallery in Chelsea.

WHEN: April 24 - May 24, 2014

WHERE: Lori Bookstein Fine Art (138 10th Avenue, New York, NY 10011)

John Crawford trained for years, after grad school at RISD, with a blacksmith/iron-worker in Tuscany. He does amazing work. In the spring, Group Teacher Sarah Whittier plans to take her XIIs to see the massive machinery he uses in his Brooklyn studio (they've been referring to him as "Hephaestus," the Greek blacksmith god), as well as to his show in Chelsea.

The Painting Center is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Molly Herman (Lower School Art Teacher), titled Lingua Franca.

WHEN:   April 22 - May 17, 2014. Opening Reception: Thursday, April 24, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: The Painting Center (547 West 27th Street, Suite 500 New York, NY 10001)

Herman’s work is concerned with the elemental language or “building blocks” of the painting process: Pigment, mark-making, texture, surface, scale, etc.
As Ms. Herman states, “the musical form of Raga resonates with me as a compositional approach which employs a tonal framework as a basis for improvisation and songs are often preformed as a catalyst toward spiritual transcendence. However, my own work aims to plainly reveal process, as with my “lozenge paintings” which reduce the range of mark-making to a steady staccato, allowing color, light and texture the freedom to interweave through the structure of marks – and new patterns or forms begin to morph.”

Other works of Herman’s explore the supporting surface of the painting by integrating collage elements quietly within the composition or acting to subtly shift the ground against a painted layer.

Rather than illustrate inspiration, Herman’s paintings pull a willing viewer toward a deeper experience of the visceral metaphors embedded within a painterly world.
