Flight from Nature: The Abstract as Ideal
May 14 - 31
Opening Reception: Tuesday May 21, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

"Flight from Nature" proposes that a great deal of painting and sculpture today is concerned with the imitation of life - it aims to represent a man, a tree or a flower. By way of contrast the artists represented in this exhibition exploit a purity of means, be that through line, color, or form, to create a complete, innocent, and at times savage, expression in the world.

There are those that claim that abstraction suffers great impoverishment by eliminating the joys of subject recognition further enhanced by a technical acuity that replicates surface appearances. The artists represented here would offer that far more is gained with work that assumes autonomy and presence. Far from being a limited expression, abstract art offers a powerful universal language-which by extension betrays utopian motives having far reaching societal and cultural consequences.

Flight from Nature features both established and emerging artists including Andrea Belag, Paul D'Agostino, Danielle Dimston, Stephen Ellis, Molly Herman, David Hixon, Catherine Howe, Bill Jensen, Margrit Lewczuk, John Newman, Fran O' Neill*, Jamie Powell, Stephen Westfall, John Zinsser.

*Special thanks to Fran O'Neill for offering curatorial assistance in the selection of the show's featured artists.
