CAROLINE PRATT AND THOMAS HART BENTON AT THE MET

The panel, "City Activities with Dance Hall," from Thomas Hart Benton’s mural "America Today."

Of great interest to the art world is The Metropolitan Museum of Art's news that “American artist Thomas Hart Benton’s epic mural America Today—a sweeping panorama of American life, celebrating the promise of modern industry and technology and the accomplishments of working people in the boom years of the 1920s—has been donated by AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.” The MET will display all ten panels in a period room beginning in 2015.

Of great interest to believers in progressive education is that City and Country founder Caroline Pratt is featured in this significant cultural landmark! Pratt is featured in the panel "City Activities with Dance Hall." You can see her on the bottom right in profile, facing a mother and child. You can also see a beautifully framed print outside the Library.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The New York Times each give a history of Thomas Hart Benton's masterwork worth reading.
