Outside Educators

Annually, more than 100 educators from around the world visit C&C’s campus to experience what happens here firsthand.

Caroline Pratt’s vision of progressive education extends beyond City and Country School. To share this approach, C&C offers Educator Visits, allowing teachers and administrators to observe our programs in action, and Block Connection, bringing hands-on training to your campus. For more information, please email educatorvisits@cityandcountry.org.

I Learn From Children
Caroline Pratt’s influential autobiography, "I Learn From Children," continues to be celebrated as a guiding light in progressive education worldwide. According to The New York Times, it is "a profound testament to the power of observing and learning from children." Block Connection

Founded in 2005, City and Country School launched the Block Connection initiative to honor founder Caroline Pratt’s educational vision and revolutionize children’s learning methods citywide. Collaborating with public school educators, C&C introduced the transformative power of open-ended materials, especially unit blocks, and the role of dramatic play in early education. This initiative has extended beyond New York and New Jersey, reaching educators internationally in Iceland, Jamaica, Canada, and Russia.

In 2018, The Tietz Family Foundation expanded the initiative, enabling C&C to establish a comprehensive program. This included the Block Connection Principals’ Breakfast, offering school leaders firsthand experience at C&C, and the Block Connection Conference, a workshop introducing public school teachers to the program.

Educator Visits

During these visits, educators can experience a snapshot of our daily schedule, which may include activities like block building, instructional learning, woodworking, yard work, our jobs program, and more. Please note, it may not be possible to accommodate specific requests due to scheduling constraints.

Visits occur from mid-October to mid-May on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with morning (9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.) and afternoon (12:00–3:00 p.m.) sessions available. Full-day visits are possible upon request.

To ensure minimal disruption, please schedule visits at least three weeks in advance (one month for groups of five or more). Following the visit, educators are invited to provide feedback to help us improve our offerings.
