Washington, D.C., Museum’s New Exhibition Includes City and Country
This major exhibition is a joint effort between curator Leonard Marcus, an expert in children’s literature, and Plus And Greater Than, a design studio from Portland, Oregon. It aims to engage children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers in the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design as portrayed in children’s books. While the museum opened in May, the process began weeks before. Students researched ancient Egyptian artifacts, sketched them from various viewpoints, and used Tinkercad, an online 3D modeling program, to create customized shapes. The artifacts were then 3D printed and painted by the students. Additionally, they used Adobe Illustrator to create information cards about their relics. It features beloved classics and contemporary favorites by renowned authors such as Sophie Blackall and Ezra Jack Keats. Visitors can explore themes of home, creativity, and societal change through interactive activities, media installations, and original environments created by authors like David Macaulay and Oliver Jeffers. The museum’s announcement states, “Stories such as Goodnight Moon, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Snowy Day, Eloise, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Hobbit, Rome Antics, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Last Stop on Market Street, and Here We Are, among hundreds of other titles, help children establish their place in the world, starting with the concept of home, in all its forms.” You can find more information about the exhibition here.
